Kano state governor Abba Yusuf has ordered the reinstatement of the deposed Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi.

Abba Yusuf on Thursday, signed the bill repealing the State Emirate Council Law 2019 that gave the state five emirate councils. The governor signed the bill at the Government House on Thursday, the same day it was passed by the state lawmakers.

The repealed law, previously known as the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, had established Rano, Karaye, Gaya, and Bichi Emirates alongside the Kano Emirate. With its repeal, these newly created emirates have been dissolved, reinstating the Kano Emirate under a single ruler.

1. Muhammadu Sanusi II, CON known by the religious title Khalifa Sanusi II is a spiritual leader in the Tijanniyah Sufi order of Nigeria

2. He was born in Kano in 1961 into the royal family as the grandson of Muhammadu Sanusi I, who was removed as Emir of Kano in 1963 and went on self-exile in Azare in Bauchi.

3. In 2020, Sanusi was dethroned as the 14th Emir of Kano by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and was exiled to Awe, Nasarawa state. He was succeeded by Aminu Ado Bayero.

4. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf reinstated him on 23 May 2024, to the throne making him the 16th and current emir of Kano.

5. Prior to his accession, Sanusi was an Islamic intellectual, academic, political economist and banker.He served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2009 to 2014, when he was also removed by the Federal Government.
