Nigeria striker Ademola Lookman has said that switching his national allegiance from England to the Super Eagles in 2022 played a crucial role in his current success.

Lookman, who was born in London and represented England at Under-17 level, helping them win the World Cup in that age group, acknowledged that the decision to switch to Nigeria significantly transformed his career.

“I think ever since I put on the Super Eagles jersey, it’s been fruitful,” Lookman said in an interview.

“We’ve been able to achieve a lot as a team, and we’re still progressing together. The camaraderie within the squad is something very special.”

“Ever since I joined the Super Eagles, everything has been on the up for me.”

Lookman, who was named CAF Men’s Player of the Year, made his debut for Nigeria only two years ago, in the first leg of the ill-fated World Cup qualifying series against Ghana.

In less than two years, the Atalanta forward has gone from being labelled a Premier League “flop” to being named Africa’s best player.

His triumph at the CAF Awards on December 16 marked a historic achievement for Nigeria, as he became the first Nigerian player born outside the country to win Africa’s top individual award.
