Mojisola Meranda has been elected and sworn in as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, succeeding Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached on Monday for gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, has made history as the first woman to hold the prestigious role of Speaker in the Assembly’s history.
Born on August 16, 1980, in Lagos, Meranda hails from a politically influential background, with her lineage rooted in prominent royal families, including Ojora, Aromire, Onitana, Oloto, and Oniru.
Her late father, Chief T.A. Lawal Akapo, was a legislator and the Ojora of Lagos, while her brother is Oba AbdulWasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, the Oniru of Iru land.

Her education journey began at Randle Primary School in 1992, followed by Anglican Girls Grammar School and Ansar-Ud-Deen Secondary School, where she earned her West African Senior Certificate in 1998.
Meranda went on to obtain a Certificate in Software Development (Network Engineering) from NIIT, a B.Sc. in Public Administration from Lagos State University (LASU) in 2013, and a Master’s in Public and International Affairs from the University of Lagos in 2020.
She is currently pursuing an MBA in Public Sector Management at the University of York in the UK.
Meranda’s career began in the public sector, starting as a personal assistant to the Senior Special Assistant on Information Technology and later to the Director of the Land Information System Support Unit (LISSU) of the Surveyor General’s office.
She also worked as the office manager at Cirrus Nigeria Limited and was the managing director/CEO of Worthline International Services Limited, which she founded.
Her political career began in the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD), which later merged to form the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meranda was first elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2015, representing Apapa Constituency I.
During her time in the Assembly, she chaired the Committee on Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and the Committee on Establishment, Training, Pension, and Public Service in the 8th Assembly.
In the 9th Assembly, she served as Chief Whip and was the Deputy Speaker in the 10th Assembly prior to her election as Speaker on January 13, 2025.
Her historic election as Speaker marks a significant achievement not only in her career but also in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
