Armed internet fraudsters have killed an officer after opening fire on a team from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Anambra.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, left another officer critically injured as the team scrambled for safety in response to the unexpected gunfire.

The officers were reportedly on a mission to apprehend a group of suspected cybercriminals, commonly known as Yahoo Boys, when they were met with violent resistance.

The officers had travelled from their zonal headquarters in Enugu to Anambra for the operation.

The deceased, believed to be an assistant superintendent, had recently completed a promotional examination.

As of Friday night, the injured officer remained in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that an investigation had begun.

“Investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing. The suspect is in custody, and the weapon has been recovered. Further details will be communicated,” Ikenga said.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has reported the arrest of 25 suspected internet fraudsters at a cybercrime training centre in Benin City, Edo.

EFCC Spokesperson Dele Oyewale made the announcement in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

Oyewale explained that the arrests, which took place on Thursday in Benin City, were based on credible intelligence.

According to him, the location was being used as a ‘yahoo’ academy or training school for internet-related fraud and other fraudulent activities.

“Items recovered from the suspects include six exotic cars, laptops, and phones.

“The suspects will be charged in court once investigations are concluded,” he said.
