The immediate past Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, has insisted that he remains the Speaker of the Assembly, despite his recent impeachment.
He argued that the process leading to his removal did not follow the proper legal procedures and vowed to challenge it in court.
Speaking on Saturday at his official residence in Ikeja, while addressing a gathering of APC members from the Mandate Group, Obasa (APC-Agege 1) claimed that he was still the legitimate Speaker until the right procedure was followed to remove him.
He accused the Assembly of using a fake mace to install Mrs. Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker and alleged that the process lacked legal legitimacy.

“I remain the Speaker until the House impeaches me through the proper process,” Obasa declared, adding that the actions taken against him were unlawful. He claimed that hundreds of police officers were deployed to intimidate his loyalists on the day of his removal and that his private residence was invaded by police, where his family and others were restricted from leaving.
Obasa also refuted accusations of financial misconduct, including claims that he spent N16 billion to build a gate at the Assembly complex and that he purchased 40 Hilux vans for N40 billion. He described these allegations as “ridiculous” and reiterated that he had not done anything wrong.
“My status in the House is clear,” he said. “I have been a member for 22 years and Speaker for nearly 10 years, contributing to the development of the state. But things must be done the right way. If they say they don’t want me anymore, let them follow the correct procedure.”
Obasa also acknowledged his contributions to the party, thanking the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, First Lady Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, and President Bola Tinubu for their support.
The Speaker was removed on January 13 by 32 out of 40 members of the Assembly over allegations of gross misconduct and financial impropriety. He was swiftly replaced by Mrs. Mojisola Meranda.
