The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed his gratitude to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, for reassiging his case.
In a statement issued by his lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor Esq., on Saturday, Kanu also thanked the general public for their support in his demand for the transfer of the casefile.
Kanu noted that he had received two letters—one from the CJN and the other from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho—informing him of the transfer of his case to another judge, following his previous complaint about the continued trial before Justice Binta Nyako.
Kanu had, on February 10, during a sitting before Justice Nyako, expressed frustration, accusing the judge of bias and demanding that she recuse herself from the trial.
“Following these recent developments, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu instructed the legal team to publicly convey his sincere gratitude to the Chief Justice of Nigeria for her sound administrative discretion and the swift response to our request,” Ejimakor said.
He continued, “Kanu also expressed his profound appreciation to the public for their support in demanding that his case be reassigned to another judge, as the law requires.
“To be clear, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has always been willing to stand trial, as he firmly believes in his innocence. However, the troubling events of the past six months (since September 2024, when the recusal issue arose) posed significant risks to his constitutional rights, particularly his right to a fair and speedy trial.
“It was with this in mind that we were compelled to take extraordinary steps to ensure that his case was properly reassigned and handled in accordance with the law.
“Now that the initial steps have been taken by the authorities to uphold the law, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team will take stock and focus on the diligent preparation of his defence.”
