At least 70 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks owned by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals are being moved from Apapa Port today, TheLeadng can confirm.

These trucks, part of a larger fleet of 4,000 recently acquired by the refinery, will be driven from Nigeria’s busiest port to the massive Dangote Refinery complex in Ibeju-Lekki.

The refinery has invested over N720 billion in this landmark initiative to deploy 4,000 CNG-powered vehicles for the nationwide distribution of refined petroleum products — a move expected to save Nigerians more than N1.7 trillion each year.

By absorbing an estimated N1.07 trillion in annual fuel distribution costs, the Dangote Refinery aims to reduce transportation expenses for marketers and large consumers, ultimately bringing down pump prices and easing inflationary pressures.

From 15 August, the refinery will begin direct delivery of fuel — including petrol and diesel — to filling stations, industrial sites, and high-volume users across the country.

According to a statement from Dangote, the facility is geared to meet Nigeria’s daily fuel consumption: 65 million litres, comprising 45 million litres of petrol (PMS), 15 million litres of diesel, and 5 million litres of aviation fuel.

With logistics costs estimated at around N45 per litre, the refinery’s new distribution model is expected to improve fuel affordability, particularly for over 42 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) reliant on diesel and petrol.

This strategic move is part of a broader vision to eliminate supply bottlenecks, boost energy efficiency, promote sustainability, and stimulate economic growth.

The company also forecasts the revival of dormant filling stations and the creation of over 15,000 direct jobs — including drivers, station managers, and CNG station attendants.

Additionally, the initiative is expected to combat cross-border fuel smuggling and support a more eco-friendly, cost-efficient distribution network.

The Presidency has hailed the move as a pivotal step in mainstreaming gas-powered transportation, while the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has praised the model as a long-overdue solution to the sector’s logistical headaches.

IPMAN’s National Publicity Secretary, Chinedu Ukadike, remarked that the initiative would significantly ease operational burdens for independent marketers by ensuring more accessible and affordable fuel supply.
