The 2026 FIFA World Cup became the most lucrative tournament in football history after FIFA distributed a record $871 million (£662 million) in prize money to the 48 participating nations.
The expanded tournament, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, concluded on Sunday, July 19, with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win their second World Cup title.

Initially, FIFA announced a prize pool of $727 million in December 2025, a 50 per cent increase from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, the governing body approved a further increase in April 2026, raising the total prize fund to $871 million.

Each team received:
- $2.5 million as a preparation grant

As a result, every country that qualified for the 2026 World Cup was guaranteed at least $12.5 million, even if it failed to progress beyond the group stage.

The tournament lasted 39 days, featured 48 teams, and included 104 matches, making it the biggest FIFA World Cup ever staged.
According to FIFA, the increased prize money was designed not only to reward sporting success but also to help participating nations offset the growing costs of competing at an expanded World Cup, while reducing financial disparities between teams.
