Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and presidential hopeful, has acknowledged that the decision to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the platform for the 2027 general elections was a challenging yet essential step for Nigeria’s political future.

Obi stated that the move followed careful reflection on the nation’s current challenges and the urgent need for transformative leadership.

“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections, with Distinguished Senator David Mark serving as National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary,” Obi wrote in a post on X on Thursday.

“This decision was not taken lightly. It comes after deep reflection on where we are as a country and what must be done to move forward,” he added.

The coalition members, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, officially endorsed the ADC as their political vehicle for 2027 at the unveiling event in Abuja on Tuesday.

“Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria receives competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first,” Obi said.

The 63-year-old, who has proposed serving a single term in office, emphasised that no single group can deliver the sweeping change Nigeria requires, stating: “To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls — even when those bridges are uneasy.”
