As Professor Mahmood Yakubu concludes his tenure as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) has praised him for his eight years of what it described as “meritorious and credible service to the fatherland.”
In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Nelson Ekujumi, the group lauded Prof. Yakubu for his “indelible contributions to deepening Nigeria’s democracy through consistent improvements in the electoral process” during his time in office.
“When you assumed leadership after the exit of your predecessor, Prof. Attahiru Jega, we were cautious and circumspect to see if you could step into his big shoes of integrity and service. To God be the glory, you not only met expectations but surpassed them, raising the bar beyond your predecessor’s achievements,” the statement said.

The group hailed the 2023 general elections as “the most free, fair, and credible in Nigeria’s democratic history,” adding that the results reflected the true will of the people as expressed at the polls.
According to Ekujumi, “We are also conscious that losers who went to court with the aim of tainting the credibility of the exercise were exposed as sore losers and unserious petitioners — a shame to the civility and sportsmanship that democracy demands.”
While thanking Prof. Yakubu for his service, CPPM expressed optimism that his successor would build on his legacy. “As you bow out, we say thank you and may God bless you with strength and wisdom to continue serving the nation to the glory of God and the benefit of humanity,” the group stated.

Ekujumi also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for conferring a national honour on the outgoing INEC Chairman, describing it as “a fitting recognition of his patriotic service and contributions to national development.”
The statement concluded with a message of goodwill: “God bless you, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. We thank, appreciate, and wish you well in your future service to God and humanity.”
