A yet-to-be-identified officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) attached to the Lagos Division has tragically slumped and died.
A video circulating online showed that the officer, who was not in uniform, collapsed and passed away in an undisclosed location in Lagos State on Sunday. The video shows the lifeless body of the officer surrounded by sympathisers, including some police officers who conducted a search of the deceased officer’s bag.
The search led to the discovery of the officer’s identity card, which confirmed that he was an EFCC officer. A voice in the video can be heard saying, “He works with EFCC. His ID card is with him.”

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the officer’s death in a telephone conversation on Monday, stating that an investigation into the incident is underway.
“Yes, the man is our officer. His death is being investigated. The incident happened on Sunday,” Oyewale said.
This comes just weeks after a similar incident, on January 15, when a suspected cybercriminal, Joshua Ikechukwu, shot an Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, Aminu Salisu, during a raid in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The EFCC operatives, who had travelled from the commission’s zonal headquarters in Enugu, were ambushed while attempting to apprehend a group of suspected cybercriminals.
Oyewale condemned negative narratives surrounding the officer’s death and reiterated the commission’s commitment to ensuring justice is served.
