Former Liverpool striker, Michael Owen, has hit out at the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for chalking off Maxwell Cornet’s goal against Chelsea on Saturday.

Cornet thought he had won a point for West Ham after smashing a loose ball past Eduoard Mendy.

However, the VAR officials on duty asked referee Andrew Madley to check the pitchside monitor.

After analyzing the action that led to the goal, Madley agreed that Bowen fouled Mendy before the ball got to Cornet and ruled out the goal.

Owen tweeted after the match: “The decision to rule out that West Ham goal is an absolute shocker.

“The GK dives at his feet, what’s he meant to do?”

Chelsea went down to Antonio’s goal before fighting back to win 2-1, thanks to goals from Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz.
