Mrs. Faith Nwoye, a teacher who fatally flogged a nine-year-old pupil, has been sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by a special court in Awka handling Women and Children related matters.
The tragic incident occurred at Landmark International School in Mgbakwu, Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The victim, Master Henry Okonkwo, was laid to rest in his hometown of Igbakwu, Ayamelum Local Government Area, after passing away in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in Awka, where he had been admitted in a coma following the severe beating by the teacher.

Offering condolences to the Okonkwo family, Commissioner for Education Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh conveyed the sympathies of the Education family and the State Government for their profound loss. Representing the Education Ministry at the burial, Mrs. Ifeoma Onyeneke, the Director of Schools, expressed regret that the promising young student had met such a tragic fate, one that might have been prevented.
Chuma-Udeh highlighted that tragedies like this could be avoided if students were enrolled in approved schools staffed by qualified teachers. She also underscored Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s stance on outlawing illegal schools in the state, emphasizing the need for adherence to educational standards and safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
