Éric Chelle, the newly appointed Head Coach of the Super Eagles, has expressed his intention to bring an attacking mentality to the national team, emphasising that football is about scoring goals.

Chelle made these remarks during his official unveiling at a colourful ceremony in the Media Conference Room of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Monday.

Chelle, who earned five caps for the Aiglons of Mali during his playing career, has also played for FC Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais. He spoke enthusiastically about his new role, expressing excitement at the opportunity to coach one of Africa’s most renowned football teams.

“I want to thank my agent, the NFF, the NSC, and indeed all Nigerians for this big opportunity,” he said. “Coaching the Super Eagles of Nigeria is an amazing job; I do not take this appointment for granted. I am elated and will do my utmost best.”

Chelle outlined his vision for the team: “Football is about scoring goals, so I favour an attacking style. I know the expectations of Nigerians and I will settle down and work diligently with my assistants towards the goal of qualifying the Super Eagles for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”

Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), urged Nigerians to rally behind the new coach and pledged full support to ensure his success. He spoke highly of Chelle’s confidence and approach, expressing belief that the coach would bring a positive change to the team.

“I see in the new Head Coach the right spirit and the right attitude, and I have faith that he will take the Super Eagles to the next level. He sees the job of leading the Super Eagles as his dream job, and that is a huge motivation in itself,” Gusau said.

The NFF President also revealed that Chelle had signed a two-year contract, with an option for an additional year should he lead the Super Eagles to the 2026 World Cup finals. Chelle will work with a team of three assistants and will oversee the Super Eagles’ preparations, starting with a supervisory role for the Super Eagles B team as they prepare for the upcoming 8th African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), confirmed the NSC’s full support for the new coach, expressing satisfaction with the appointment process. He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing the necessary resources for the NFF to help Chelle succeed.

“Football is that one factor that unites all Nigerians and gives them tremendous joy. On our part, we are satisfied with the process leading to Mr Chelle’s appointment and will support the NFF to ensure he has the most conducive atmosphere to do his job,” Dikko said.
