Former Senator representing Rivers East at the National Assembly, Sen. John Mbata, has been elected as the new President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the leading socio-cultural organisation for the Igbo people.
Mbata’s election took place at the Ohanaeze Ndigbo General Assembly meeting held at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu on Friday.
He succeeds Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu, who was appointed to complete the tenure of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu from Imo State.

Mbata’s election was unanimous, with the process witnessed by Governors from Enugu, Imo, and Anambra States, along with prominent figures including Senators Chris Ngige, Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, and other Igbo dignitaries.
The newly elected leadership includes Prince Okey Nwadinobi from Abia as National Deputy President, Chief Emeka Sibeidu from Anambra as Secretary-General, Chidera Anieke from Enugu as National Treasurer, Ezechukwu Ezechi from Imo as National Publicity Secretary, and Okey Ugwu from Ebonyi as National Legal Adviser.
The position of Deputy Secretary-General was awarded to a representative from Delta State, alongside other key appointments.
In his speech, Mbata expressed his gratitude to the outgoing President-General for his exemplary leadership and for facilitating the election process. He pledged to lead by example and urged the support and collaboration of the governors of the states comprising Ohanaeze Ndigbo to drive the organisation’s progress.
