In a chilling incident in Anambra State, four individuals have been arrested for allegedly burning a 74-year-old woman to death.

The suspects, including a 21-year-old woman named Chinyere Ekwenugo, are said to have conspired with others to carry out the heinous act in the Ifitedunu area of the state.

According to police reports, the crime took place on Sunday at around 9 a.m. The victim, who was reportedly confined to a wheelchair, was set on fire by the suspects, including Ekwenugo’s boyfriend, Ifeanyi Igwe, who remains at large.

The group reportedly even brought a casket to bury the woman before security operatives intervened.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra, stated that during interrogation, Ekwenugo confessed to her involvement in the murder, which also involved three other suspects: Uzochukwu Okeke, 47; Fidel Anayo, 60; and Ikenna Anene, 54, all from the Abagana area.

The police have recovered the charred remains of the deceased, her wheelchair, and the casket from the scene. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend Igwe, the key suspect in the crime.

The deceased’s body has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy and further investigation into the cause of death.

The case has been transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for a more thorough investigation, as the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, urged for calm. Authorities are also investigating the broader circumstances surrounding the crime to determine the full extent of the suspects’ involvement.
