Germany has launched a new online platform aimed at simplifying the visa application process for Nigerians wishing to work, study, or join family members in the country.

Germany’s Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, described the new online visa application portal as a positive development that will help the country address its shortage of skilled workers.

“Every year, Germany faces a shortfall of at least 400,000 skilled workers—400,000 brilliant minds and even more agile hands to keep our country running, particularly in sectors such as skilled crafts, care, and technology. Our national economy is in global competition to attract trainees, apprentices, and students,” Ms Baerbock said.

“In times like these, we cannot afford to put off the best from coming here to roll up their sleeves due to lengthy paper applications and even longer waiting periods.”

“As one of the world’s largest economies and a modern immigration country, we need a national visa process that is state-of-the-art—modern, digital, and secure,” she added.

The portal, accessible worldwide, allows applicants to select from 28 categories of national visas and is available at all 167 German visa offices globally.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise the immigration process and tackle Germany’s urgent shortage of skilled workers.

By simplifying visa access, Germany aims to attract skilled professionals and create a more inclusive, efficient immigration system that aligns with contemporary demands.
