The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block all websites hosting pornographic and obscene content in the country.

The resolution was passed on Tuesday following a motion introduced by Dalhatu Tafoki, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker from Katsina.

Tafoki argued that cyber pornography is an escalating global issue, and Nigeria has not done enough to tackle it. He highlighted that Nigeria is a deeply religious country, where the major faiths forbid nudity and obscenity.

Tafoki also pointed to several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that have enacted laws banning pornography.

The lawmaker warned about the harmful effects of pornography, which, he said, could lead to increased cases of adultery, prostitution, and addiction.

Tafoki further referenced concerns from psychologists and sociologists about the psychological, social, and mental consequences of consuming pornographic content.

He referenced warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists around the world have issued stern warnings on the psychological, sociological and mental consequences of viewing pornographic content,” he said.

Pornographic content includes sexually explicit pictures, writing, or other material whose primary purpose is to cause sexual arousal, the presentation or production of this material, lurid or sensational material.
