I didn’t discuss Kanu’s release with South East governors – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has clarified that discussions about the release of Nnamdi Kanu were not part of his recent meeting with South East governors in Enugu.

In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo emphasized that the meeting was convened at the governors’ invitation to address regional development issues.

Contrary to media reports, Obasanjo and Chief Emeka Anyaoku met with the governors to discuss matters such as security, infrastructure, economic cooperation, and other regional development initiatives.

He said the purported release of Nnamdi Kanu by the Federal Government was not included in the agenda nor discussed during the meeting.

“The meeting with them was at my invitation and of Anyaoku before their summit began,” the statement quoted Obasanjo. He reiterated that the focus of their discussions centered solely on advancing regional development and collaboration among the South East states.

He said the clarification aimed to set the record straight amid speculation and media reports suggesting otherwise.

TheLeadng reports that the South-East Governors resolved to interface with the Federal Government to secure the release of the Leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu, born 25 September 1967, is a British political activist known for advocating for the secession and independence of Biafra from Nigeria. He is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which he founded in 2012. The main aim of IPOB is to restore the defunct separatist state of Biafra which existed in Nigeria’s Eastern Region during the Nigerian Civil War of 1967–1970.

The forum in a communique issued and signed by the South-East Governors Forum at the end of its meeting in the Government House, Enugu, also said it has resolved to visit President Bola Tinubu to discuss pressing issues concerning the South- East region.

The governors are Alex Otti of Abia, Hope Uzodimma of Imo, Charles Soludo of Anambra and Francis Nwifuru of it Ebonyi States while Enugu State Gov. Peter Mbah is the host.
