The Federal Government of Nigeria has insisted there is no security threat within its capital, Abuja, following an advisory issued by the United States Mission in Nigeria warning all Americans to avoid military and government facilities in the city.

The US Mission stated on Monday: “Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, U.S. Mission Nigeria informs U.S. citizens that all U.S. Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to Nigerian military sites or other government venues in Abuja at this time.”

In response, the Nigerian Government maintained that Abuja remains safe for both residents and visitors.

In a statement, Nigeria’s Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said: “The Federal Government has taken note of the latest security advisory issued by the US Embassy restricting its staff and their families from non-official travel to military sites or government facilities within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

“While we respect the rights of foreign missions to issue travel advisories to their citizens, it is important to categorically state that Abuja remains safe for citizens, residents, and visitors alike.

“Nigeria’s security agencies are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and protection of all residents of the FCT and across the country. The current security architecture in Abuja has been proactive, achieving significant successes in detecting, preventing, and neutralising threats.

“We understand the US advisory is based on general global developments and does not reflect any imminent or specific threat within the FCT. However, we reiterate to all diplomatic missions, investors, development partners, and the public that there is no cause for alarm.

“The Federal Government reaffirms its commitment to the safety of all residents and to maintaining Abuja’s reputation as one of the most secure capitals worldwide. Our security and intelligence agencies continue to monitor developments nationwide and stand ready to respond decisively to any threat.

“We encourage citizens to continue their lawful activities without fear while remaining vigilant and reporting any suspicious behaviour to the relevant authorities,” the minister added.

Meanwhile, the US State Department has issued a “worldwide caution” for Americans, citing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a factor that could increase security risks for those travelling or living abroad.

“The conflict between Israel and Iran has led to travel disruptions and periodic airspace closures across the Middle East. There is potential for demonstrations against US citizens and interests abroad,” the State Department’s security alert warned.

The United States Mission in Nigeria’s security alert further advises American citizens to avoid non-essential travel to military and government sites in Abuja due to heightened global security concerns.

The alert emphasises that all embassy personnel and their families are prohibited from visiting military or government venues in Abuja unless for official business.

This advisory follows unspecified global developments prompting heightened security measures and a reassessment of movements near sensitive locations.

Americans residing in or visiting Nigeria are urged to remain vigilant in public places, especially those frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.

The embassy also recommends avoiding large gatherings, varying daily routines, and familiarising themselves with emergency exits in buildings.

US nationals are encouraged to review their personal security plans and exercise increased caution throughout their stay in Nigeria.
