Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom has officially dissolved the State Executive Council, an official government statement revealed.

The announcement was made by Mr. Enobong Uwah, the Secretary to the State Government, in Uyo on Friday, stating that the dissolution takes effect immediately.

The statement directed all former commissioners and special advisers to hand over their duties to the permanent secretaries in their respective ministries. In cases where there is no permanent secretary, the handover should be made to the most senior director in the ministry.

“The governor expresses his sincere appreciation to the outgoing executive council members for their dedicated service to the state. He wishes them well in their future endeavours and thanks them for their contributions to the development of the state,” the statement noted.

Governor Eno inherited the executive council members from his predecessor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, about 19 months ago.

In a media briefing held in September 2024 to mark the 37th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State, Governor Eno had announced the dissolution of the State Executive Council, stating that it was time for a new set of professionals to bring fresh ideas into governance.

Some of the commissioners had been in office for nearly a decade, with some having served under former Governor Godswill Akpabio.

In addition, during the New Year Thanksgiving Service on January 2, Governor Eno had criticised his commissioners for claiming there was “nothing beneficial in government” yet remaining unwilling to resign. He compared their situation to a nagging housewife who would complain that her marriage was unfulfilling, despite having seven children from it.

To mark their service, the state government is expected to host a dinner in honour of the outgoing members of the State Executive Council.
