A 26-year-old man, Eniola Ganiyu, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 20 bags of charcoal worth a total of N120,000.

Ganiyu, whose address was not provided, is facing charges of stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp. Akinwale Oriyomi, informed the court that the offence was committed between December 25, 2024, and January 4, 2025, at Okesa Market, Ado-Ekiti.

According to Oriyomi, Ganiyu, along with accomplices now at large, stole 16 bags of charcoal valued at N96,000 belonging to the complainant, Bolaji Oluwaseun. Additionally, Ganiyu is accused of stealing another four bags of charcoal worth N24,000, belonging to Omowunmi Blessing.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 302 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

Defence counsel, Iyanu Olumuagun, appealed for leniency, noting that the stolen bags of charcoal had been recovered by the police. Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun discharged Ganiyu, offering a caution against further involvement in criminal activities.

In another case, two brothers, Sada Adamu (40) and Usman Adamu (32), were arraigned in a Karu Magistrates’ Court, Abuja, on charges of breach of trust and misappropriation of N1.8 million.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges of criminal breach of trust, cheating, and criminal misappropriation. The prosecutor, Ayotunde Adeyanju, told the court that the complainant, Musa Adamu, entrusted his provision shop, worth N1.8 million, to the defendants when he travelled to Katsina State to visit his ailing mother in August 2024.

Upon his return, Musa discovered that the defendants had misappropriated and emptied the shop. The prosecutor stated that the actions of the defendants violated Sections 79, 312, 322, and 309 of the Penal Code.

Magistrate Mr. Lami Sani granted bail to the defendants, setting the amount at N750,000 each, with one surety in like sum. The case was adjourned until March 20, 2025, for further hearing.
