A mother of five, Mrs Chioma Nwaka, has tragically died after being set on fire by her husband, Mr Sunday Nwaka, in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra state.

The attack occurred following a domestic dispute, during which Mr Nwaka allegedly poured fuel on his wife and set her alight.

Mrs Nwaka, who suffered severe burns, was seen in a viral video on Tuesday desperately trying to escape the flames. Neighbours and passersby managed to extinguish the fire, but her injuries were critical.

She was rushed to a medical facility in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka, where she was pronounced dead around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

The husband has been arrested and will face charges in connection with the incident.

Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has vowed to ensure the prosecution of the man.

Soludo, the founder of Healthy Living Initiative, told journalists on Thursday in Awka, that she would follow-up closely on the case and ensure that justice was served.

“I saw the viral incident and directed an immediate visit to the scene of the incident.

“I have received details of the incident from the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo and her Health counterpart, Dr Afam Obidike, who visited the scene.

“I will ensure that the case is followed closely until justice is served,” she said.

The governor’s wife, who described the incident as horrific and inhumane, expressed her concern over the increasing incidence of domestic violence and abuse in many households.

She called for a comprehensive social reform, beginning with a systemic approach to tackling drug use and its related issues.

“The state government treats domestic violence and abuse as serious crimes, and no individual found guilty of such offences will go unpunished,” Dr Soludo stated.

“However, the state government will also ensure the best possible support for the five children of the victim,” she added.
