Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concern over the allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling for a “thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation.”

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Atiku urged President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to take the allegations seriously, ensuring a “credible, transparent, and independent investigation” into the matter.

“At this critical moment, we must foster an environment where female legislators can serve without fear of harassment or intimidation,” Atiku wrote. “This is crucial not only to uphold the integrity of our institutions but also to guarantee that every Nigerian, regardless of gender, is treated with dignity and respect.”

The opposition leader emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, noting their potential impact on the credibility of Nigeria’s highest legislative body. He added, “The allegations are grave and deserve a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation. The Nigerian Senate represents the voice of the people. Those who serve in it — especially its leadership — must uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect for the citizens they serve.”

Atiku further highlighted the importance of ensuring the Senate President embodies “unimpeachable character,” given his influential position as the third most powerful figure in the country.

He also pointed out that sexual harassment in the workplace is a major barrier to women’s advancement, which ultimately hampers national progress. “Allegations of such misconduct should never be dismissed, particularly when they involve a public officer with immense power and responsibility,” Atiku stated.

In closing, Atiku stressed that the way this matter is handled will send a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the inclusion of women in governance.
