The Lagos State House of Assembly, on Monday, witnessed a significant change in leadership as the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, officially moved into the Speaker’s office, receiving the support of fellow members.
Meranda was accompanied by assembly members to the complex in a display of solidarity and backing.
This shift in leadership came in the wake of the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on 13 January.

Despite Obasa’s claims on Saturday that his removal was unconstitutional and his assertion of continuing to hold the office, he was noticeably absent from the assembly on Monday. This absence occurred amid heightened security measures to prevent any disturbances.
Meranda’s assumption of office was met with a warm reception from her colleagues, who have since embraced her leadership and rallied behind her. Members were seen accompanying the Speaker to her office, clearly indicating their collective endorsement of the new leadership.
Obasa’s failure to appear, despite having promised to resume duties on Monday, has raised questions about his future actions.
The atmosphere at the assembly on Monday reflected the lawmakers’ commitment to supporting Meranda’s efforts to maintain stability and fulfil their legislative responsibilities following the leadership change. Members were photographed with the new Speaker, while the acting Clerk also joined in the celebrations.
