Actor Olumide Oworu has revealed the personal reasons behind his decision to contest against veteran actor Desmond Elliot for the Surulere Constituency 1 seat in the 2023 Lagos State House of Assembly elections.

In an insightful conversation on the podcast “Nollywood On Radio,” Oworu shared his dissatisfaction with the current state of Nigeria, particularly the decline of various industries.

He expressed that his motivation to run was driven by a desire to contribute to positive change and improve the country’s future, especially for the younger generation.

“Almost nothing, aside from the entertainment industry, sports, and a few others, has anything positive,” Oworu said, noting that many sectors are facing serious challenges. “I want to live in Nigeria, I want to raise my family in a country that is a land of opportunities.”

Oworu’s decision to challenge Elliot, who has held the Surulere Constituency 1 seat for multiple terms, was fueled by his belief that politics must focus on collective growth and national betterment. “I wanted to be a part of the people making change in society,” he stated, emphasizing the need for fresh ideas and active involvement in shaping Nigeria’s future.

A veteran of the screen, Oworu is known for his role as Tari in the popular TV series The Johnsons and has built a successful career in the entertainment industry.

In February 2023, he made his intentions clear by running on the Labour Party platform with hopes of unseating Elliot. Although Elliot retained his seat, Oworu’s campaign underscored the growing interest of young, influential figures in shaping political discourse and bringing change to Nigerian governance.
