The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed to correct the mistakes made during the 2023 elections and focus on reclaiming the presidency in 2027, aiming to unseat Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Factional National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, addressed reporters, acknowledging the party’s shortcomings in the 2023 elections but emphasising that the focus remains on the 2027 presidential race.

He said: “We made a mistake in the 2023 elections, but what matters for us is to take back the presidency in 2027.”

Anyanwu also dismissed rumours of any faction within the party, particularly one allegedly led by Umar Damagum.

He stated, “There is no faction in PDP, led by Umar Damagum. PDP is stable. We have held our congresses in 29 states, and there are no issues, except a few minor matters, which are in every party.”

Speaking on his long-standing relationship with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, Anyanwu reflected on their time as council chairmen and said that any grievances involving Wike should be addressed through the party’s Disciplinary Committee.

On his own position within the party, Anyanwu clarified that despite a Court of Appeal ruling for his removal, he remains the PDP National Secretary.

He pointed out that an appeal had been filed at the Supreme Court, which issued a stay of execution, and that a Federal High Court judgment had validated his tenure.

Meanwhile the crisis within the PDP may escalate further as two factional national secretaries, Sunday Ude-Okoye and Anyanwu, plan to resume office today at the party’s headquarters in Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

In separate interviews on Sunday, both Ude-Okoye and Anyanwu confirmed their intention to return to their respective duties.

Ude-Okoye’s appointment was recently affirmed by the Court of Appeal, while Anyanwu, who refuses to accept the verdict, insists that he remains the legitimate party secretary.

The division within the party has deepened, with top officials backing one of the two men. Sources reveal that at least 12 members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and some governors are supporting Ude-Okoye, while others remain loyal to Anyanwu.

The ongoing crisis, which began after the 2023 elections, has been exacerbated by the influence of acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, a close ally of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

The turmoil continues to affect all levels and structures within the party.
