The Headies, Nigeria’s premier music awards, is set to return home in 2025 with two separate editions, its organisers have announced.

A video shared on The Headies’ X page featured Ayo Animashuan, the founder of The Headies, who revealed that the 17th edition of the prestigious awards will take place on April 5, 2025, focusing on music from 2024. He also shared that the nominations for this edition will be released on February 12.

Animashuan further disclosed that the 18th edition will be held in December, celebrating music from both 2024 and 2025.

“This awards show that will take place in April was meant to happen last year, but for some reasons, it didn’t. We did not want to miss a calendar year… So, the next edition will be in December. It will be part of the Detty December trend,” Animashuan explained.

The Headies, originally known as the Hop World Awards, was established in 2006 to recognise exceptional achievements in the Nigerian music industry. The inaugural event, hosted by Darry Art Alade, was held on March 10 at the Shell Hall of the MUSON Centre in Lagos. Notable winners from that first edition included Don Jazzy, P-Square, Mode 9, DJ Jimmy Jatt, and Keke Ogungbe.

In 2023, however, the organisers took the 16th Headies Awards overseas, hosting it at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 3. The event saw Rema and Burna Boy take home three awards each, while other winners included Wizkid, Davido, Ayra Starr, Asake, and Omah Lay. The 2023 edition also marked the induction of Angelique Kidjo into the Headies Hall of Fame.

The organisers confirmed in February 2024 that the 17th edition will return to Nigeria after hosting the 2022 and 2023 events in the United States.
