Some post-graduate academic gowns for the 54th convocation ceremony of the University of Lagos, have been stolen.
It was learnt that the gowns were stolen by yet to be identified persons who also vandalised the bus conveying the academic attire ahead of the convocation ceremony.
The gowns which have been paid for, were scheduled for distribution to the graduating students.
It was learnt that the distribution of the gowns has witnessed rowdiness despite the fact that each graduate paid N15,000 for the collection of the gown.
The management of the university School of Post-Graduate Studies (SPGS) in a terse text message and mail sent to post-graduate students said: “Dear graduate, we regret to inform you that the distribution of SPGS academic gowns is now suspended.
“Sadly, the remaining gowns were stolen, and our bus vandalised this afternoon.”
The Leadng reports that UNILAG will produce 379 first-class graduates at its 54th Convocation scheduled for Jan. 17.
The institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, revealed this on Wednesday during the pre-convocation press conference that heralds the institution’s 54th Convocation.
Giving a breakdown of the graduates, the VC said a total of 17,464 students out of which 10,578 are first degrees and 6,886 postgraduate students will bow out during the convocation billed to hold from Monday, January 15 till Wednesday, January 18.
Ogunsola stressed that David Akanmu from the Faculty of Engineering, with a perfect score of 5.00 emerged as the overall best-graduating student and also the best-graduating student in Science.
On conferment of Honorary Doctorate degrees in recognition of personalities, she said the institution will award the degrees to Prof. Toyin Falola, of the University of Texas at Austin, Prof. Phyllis Kanki, a professor of Immunology at the Harvard Chan School of Public Health in Boston and Professor Attahiru Jega, a Professor of Political Science.
