Former Senate President, David Mark, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing ongoing internal divisions, a persistent leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences that, in his view, have reduced the party to a mere shadow of its former self.

In a letter dated 27 June and addressed to the PDP Chairman in his Otukpo Ward, Benue State, Mark expressed deep regret over the state of the party he helped to establish in 1998, announcing his departure after nearly three decades of loyal membership.

“I extend warm greetings to you and all members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otukpo Ward 1, and by extension, to the entirety of Benue State and Nigeria. I write to formally notify you of my decision to resign my membership of the party with immediate effect,” Mark stated.

APC National Chairman Ganduje Resigns Amid Mounting Controversy

Reflecting on his long-standing commitment to the party, he wrote:

“You may recall that over the years, I have remained resolute and deeply committed to the ideals of the PDP.

“Even when nearly all stakeholders departed following our defeat in the 2015 presidential election, I pledged to remain the last man standing.

“I worked tirelessly to rebuild, reconcile, and reposition the party—efforts that, without sounding immodest, helped restore the PDP to national relevance and re-established it as a viable political platform for many Nigerians.”

However, Mark noted that recent developments had compelled him to reconsider his position.

“Recent events—characterised by deepening internal divisions, a protracted leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences—have sadly reduced the party to a shadow of its former self, exposing it to public ridicule,” he said.

He added: “Following extensive consultations with my family, friends, and political associates, I have decided to join the National Coalition of Political Opposition Movement in Nigeria, as part of a collective effort to rescue our nation and safeguard our hard-won democracy.”

Tinubu Sets Tough Conditions for Fubara’s Reinstatement

David Mark represented Benue South in the Senate from 1999 to 2019 and served as Senate President from 2007 to 2015. His resignation marks his first-ever defection from the PDP.

He now joins other prominent opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Aminu Tambuwal, Sule Lamido, Liyel Imoke, and Babangida Aliyu, in what appears to be a coordinated political movement aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu’s leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
