The nationwide enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy by the Nigeria Police Force has been abruptly suspended, following an interim court order that has temporarily clipped the wings of the planned crackdown.
The Police had announced on December 15, 2025, that enforcement of the tinted glass permit regime would resume from January 2, 2026, citing public safety and internal security concerns. The announcement immediately stirred public debate, with motorists raising questions about timing, implementation and possible abuse.
But barely two days later, the policy hit a legal roadblock.

On December 17, 2025, the Nigeria Police Force was served with an interim order issued in Suit No. HOR/FHR/M/31/2025, restraining it from proceeding with enforcement pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit, or until the order is vacated.
Faced with the court directive, the Police formally entered appearance, filed preliminary objections and applied for the vacation of the interim order. The court has since adjourned the matter to January 20, 2026, setting the stage for a decisive legal showdown.
In the meantime, the enforcement has been placed on hold nationwide.
According to the Force, the decision to suspend action is not a retreat from security responsibilities, but a reflection of its constitutional obligation to respect judicial authority. The Police insist that compliance with the court order is non negotiable, even as security concerns remain.
Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed that the Force remains committed to the rule of law while pursuing its core mandate of protecting lives and property. He noted that intelligence driven and lawful strategies will continue to be deployed to tackle security threats across the country.

For now, motorists can breathe easy. The tinted glass permit enforcement, once again a national flashpoint, is back in the hands of the courts.
