Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, has announced the Federal Government’s approval of a 50 per cent tariff increase for telecommunication companies.

He explained that the hike is crucial to sustaining the industry, enabling telecom companies to invest in new infrastructure and enhance connectivity.

Tijani made the disclosure at the inaugural Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN) summit in Ibadan, themed “The Rain of Transformation is upon us: CEOs Arise.” The minister urged Nigerian youth to spearhead technological advancements, as the current administration focuses on providing the necessary infrastructure.

He stated, “The biggest challenge for governments is individuals, as we invest in infrastructure to drive the progress of technology. We need innovators, entrepreneurs, and individuals to build the technologies.”

Tijani also commended Dr. Olusola Ayoola, the founder of RAIN, for his significant contributions to Nigeria’s ICT development, particularly in putting Ibadan on the map. “Governments cannot build the progress we want on their own. What they can do is build the foundation for that progress,” he added.

The minister expressed confidence that robotics and AI would play a key role in Nigeria’s future prosperity. He highlighted that the application of AI in various sectors would fuel productivity and innovation, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that enable technological advancement.

Chief Aderemi Oseni, the Special Guest at the summit and Chairman of the House Committee on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, emphasised the need for capacity-building in technology to address youth unemployment. He stressed that fostering opportunities in tech would help empower young people and reduce unemployment rates.

Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, former CEO of First Bank of Nigeria Ltd., discussed the transformative impact of robotics and AI on business operations, noting that these technologies have revolutionised decision-making, increased efficiency, and reduced operational costs.

Mr. Bayo Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the Oyo State Governor on ICT and e-Governance, highlighted the state’s technological strides and its continued investment in building robotics and AI hubs to support educational initiatives.

Dr. Olusola Ayoola, the convener of the RAIN summit, concluded by stressing the importance of developing local talent in AI and robotics, noting that Nigeria has the capacity to drive technological growth and prosperity. He advocated for policies that would make it easier for young Nigerians to learn and excel in these fields.

The event concluded with the presentation of awards of excellence to Dr. Bosun Tijani and Justice Ruqayat Ayoola, the mother of RAIN’s CEO, in recognition of their contributions to Nigeria’s technological development.
