There was wild jubilation in Enugu State as Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, returned home after being released from prison in the United Kingdom.

According to an anonymous source, Beatrice, who had been sentenced to five years in a UK prison, arrived back in Nigeria on Tuesday and is currently in Abuja. The news of her return sparked widespread celebrations in her family’s home in the Mpu community, Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The Ekweremadus and their associate, Obinna Obeta, were sentenced in 2023 by a UK court for their involvement in an organ-trafficking plot.

Mr. Benjamin Chijioke, President of the Mpu Town Union Federated, described Beatrice’s return as a huge relief for the community. He expressed hope for Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s release, praying for his safe return to join his family.

“Our joy as Mpu people knows no bounds. It is a great day for us. Since morning, there has been jubilation in all the villages. People are shedding tears of joy, especially those who relied on the philanthropic efforts of the family. Today is our Orie market day, and the whole market was alive with celebration,” Chijioke said.

He also prayed for divine intervention for the senator, hoping that he too would return soon. “We thank God for everything, but we miss them greatly. Their absence has caused a huge setback to our community.”

Ogbuka Edwin, the councillor of Mpu Ward, also joined the celebrations, acknowledging the gap created by the Ekweremadus’ absence. “Today is like a public holiday in Mpu Community. The news has brought so much joy to us. We will continue to pray until our hero and leader, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, is reunited with his family,” Edwin said.
