The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mr Mudashiru Obasa. The impeachment took place during an emergency plenary session in Ikeja on Monday.

The Deputy Speaker, Mrs Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa 1), was subsequently elected and sworn in by the lawmakers as the new Speaker.

The Clerk of the House, Mr Olalekan Onafeko, has also been suspended indefinitely, while the Chief Whip of the House, Mr Mojeed Fatai, was elected as the new Deputy Speaker.

Security personnel have taken control of the Assembly premises to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order.

At the time of publishing this report, the details surrounding Obasa’s impeachment had yet to be disclosed, as no official statements had been released by the Assembly or its leadership. However, sources suggest that allegations of financial impropriety may have played a significant role in his removal.

Obasa (APC-Agege I), a six-term lawmaker, had held the position of Speaker for several years and had previously been embroiled in controversies regarding the alleged mismanagement of Assembly funds.

Obasa’s impeachment marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the House.
