Ekiti Queens Football Club started their 2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Heartland Queens of Owerri on Wednesday.
The match, held at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado-Ekiti, saw Ekiti Queens dominate possession in the first half. Despite controlling the game, the hosts struggled to convert their chances, and the first 45 minutes ended goalless.
The second half proved more fruitful for Ekiti Queens, as they doubled their efforts. In the 74th minute, substitute Odunayo Olaleye delivered the match-winning goal, calmly placing the ball to the left of the Heartland goalkeeper to secure the only goal of the match.

Head Coach Jacob Vandi was pleased with his team’s performance, praising their determination and adherence to instructions.
He also expressed gratitude to the fans, the club’s management, and the State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, for their unwavering support.
“I want to commend the team for a deserved victory because they played well to earn it,” Vandi said after the match. “I equally want to appreciate our amiable governor for his support and ensuring that the team was given all it needed to improve their performance.
