The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described the Abuja University of Technology, Abaji asa glorified secondary school.

Wike who made his feeling known about the state of the University on Friday during a stakeholders’ town hall meeting in Abaji, expressed disappointment with the existing physical infrastructure and facilities, stressing that is not befitting of the nation’s capital city.

Responding to appeal for the completion of the University in September from the Chairman of Abaji Area Council; Hon. Abubakar Abdullahi, the minister observed that the structures at the school were not up to required standards and will therefore not be possible for him to commission the project in September this year.

“I am not going to promise you here that it will be September, I won’t do that. Any thing worth doing, is worth doing well. I cannot be a minister of FCT and come to where we want to open a University as if its a glorified secondary school, I will not do that,” he said

While assuring the residence of Bwari and FCT in general of his willingness to complete the University, the minister said he is going to invite the Mandate Secretary of Education Secretariat to bring the master plan of the school for review and upgraded re-designing before he proceeds with the project.

“If I go back, I am going to summon the mandate secretary education to bring me the master plan of this university. You will see how serious we will be to making sure that the basic facilities are put in place and then the University can start up well. I don’t want to stand here now in order to make you happy to say September, I won’t do that. That is political talk, am not here to political talk, I am here to talk and do”.

Construction work at the University, owned by the Federal Capital Territory, started in 2011 and is yet to commence academic activities.
