This honour comes amid growing global recognition of Nigerian football, with players and coaching staff alike drawing international acclaim following the Super Falcons’ triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Madugu’s nomination is not only a personal milestone but also a moment of immense pride for Nigeria, further cementing the nation’s reputation as a dominant force in African women’s football.

Adding to the celebrations, Super Falcons’ goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has also been shortlisted for a major accolade – the 2025 Ballon d’Or Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year.

Nnadozie, who captained the Nigerian side to their record-extending 10th WAFCON title in Morocco, delivered a series of outstanding performances throughout the tournament. Her heroics included crucial penalty saves and commanding displays that anchored the Falcons’ unbeaten campaign.

While Madugu and Nnadozie enjoy well-earned recognition, Spain’s Aitana Bonmatí remains the favourite for the Women’s Ballon d’Or, as she aims to secure the prestigious title for a third consecutive year.
