The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a formal apology to candidates and the general public following the discovery of technical issues affecting the recently released results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
In a statement released on Thursday, 7th August, from the Council’s headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, acknowledged that certain measures introduced to combat examination malpractice contributed to the issue. One such measure was a new innovation known as paper serialisation.
The serialisation method, which is already in use by another national examination body, was applied to key subjects including Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics. However, an internal post-release review revealed unexpected technical bugs that affected the accuracy of the released scores.
In light of this, WAEC has temporarily suspended access to results via its result-checking portal in order to address and rectify the anomalies. The Council reaffirmed its commitment to fairness and professionalism, pledging to resolve the matter transparently and within the next 24 hours.
WAEC expressed sincere regret for any inconvenience caused to affected candidates, advising those who have already checked their results to do so again after the rectification period for updated and accurate information.
“We appreciate the patience and understanding of our candidates and the general public as we work diligently to correct this matter,” the statement read. “WAEC remains steadfast in its mission to uphold excellence, fairness, and transparency in all our assessment processes.”
