The children of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, have thrown their weight behind plans to commit one-third of his estimated $36.5 billion fortune to philanthropy, in what is set to become one of the largest charitable commitments in the history of the Global South.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the endorsement marks a significant milestone in the succession and legacy planning of Africa’s wealthiest family, with the next generation pledging to balance business growth with large-scale social impact.
Dangote’s daughter, Halima Dangote, an Executive Director at Dangote Industries Limited, confirmed that the family fully supports dedicating a substantial portion of the billionaire’s wealth to charitable causes across Africa.

The commitment is expected to channel more than $12 billion into the Aliko Dangote Foundation over time, dramatically expanding its interventions in health, education, economic empowerment and humanitarian relief.
The foundation, one of Africa’s largest private philanthropic organisations, has played a major role in tackling malnutrition, improving healthcare access, supporting education and responding to humanitarian emergencies across the continent.
With the additional funding, the Foundation is expected to scale programmes aimed at reducing child mortality, combating malnutrition and expanding vocational education and skills development across Africa.
The announcement comes as Dangote’s fortune continues to rise following the successful operations of the $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery, alongside strong performances by Dangote Cement and the Group’s agricultural businesses.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Dangote’s wealth has increased by more than $6.5 billion this year, placing him among the world’s 65 richest individuals.
Analysts say the unified support from Dangote’s heirs is unusual among large family-owned business empires, where wealth transfers often trigger succession disputes and disagreements over inheritance.
Instead, the family’s endorsement signals a deliberate strategy to institutionalise philanthropy as a permanent pillar of the Dangote legacy.
Experts in wealth management believe the move could become a defining example for Africa’s growing number of ultra-high-net-worth families, encouraging structured giving alongside wealth preservation.

If fully implemented, the commitment would rank among the largest philanthropic pledges ever made by an African individual and further cement the Aliko Dangote Foundation’s position as one of the continent’s most influential charitable institutions.
