The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has suspended lectures and summoned all students to an emergency meeting as concerns mount over security following recent violent incidents within and around the institution.
The university management announced that academic activities would be suspended to ensure full participation in the meeting, which is scheduled to hold on Friday.
The decision comes amid heightened security concerns, barely two weeks after the beheaded body of a farmer was discovered on farmland within the university’s permanent site.

The development also follows the recent death of a student, Ibrahim Mbaya, who allegedly died after being beaten by a mob at an off campus apartment over accusations of stealing a mobile phone.
In an internal memorandum signed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ishaya Tanko, the university said the meeting was convened to address developments threatening peace and security within the institution.
“In view of recent events that threaten the peace, security and good image of our University, I have approved the convening of a crucial meeting with all students of the University of Jos,” the memorandum stated.
According to the Vice Chancellor, discussions will centre on security concerns across the university community, recent misconduct involving students and measures to protect lives and property.

“The primary objective of this meeting is to deliberate on general security concerns within the University community, recent unhealthy activities of students and to chart a collective course of action to safeguard the well-being of all members of the University community,” Professor Tanko said.
The university has not indicated when normal academic activities will resume, but management said the temporary suspension is aimed at ensuring maximum student participation in the security meeting as authorities work to address growing concerns over safety on and around the campus.
