The reinstatement of the deposed Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, is a fulfilment of a campaign promise, according to Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf.
In 2020, then Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje dethroned him and exiled him from Kano state to the Loko development area of Nasarawa State, and later relocated him to Awe Local Government Area within the same state. In November 2021, the Federal High Court in Abuja declared his banishment from Kano State as unlawful and unconstitutional.
However, Abba Yusuf on Thursday, signed the bill repealing the State Emirate Council Law 2019 that gave the state five emirate councils.
The governor signed the bill at the Government House on Thursday, the same day it was passed by the state lawmakers.

During the event, as per a statement by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the governor highlighted that the new law facilitated the reinstatement of Mr. Lamido as Emir of Kano and the removal of all five Emirs from their respective emirates. He emphasized that this action was in alignment with his campaign promises to the state’s residents.
Governor Yusuf remarked, “The law provided an opportunity for reinstatement of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, and removal of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, the Emir of Bichi, Nasir Ado Bayero, Emir of Rano, Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa, Emir of Karaye, Ibrahim Abubakar II, and Emir of Gaya, Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir.”
Furthermore, he expressed that the return of Muhammad Sanusi II to the throne would foster peace and prosperity, underscoring that the repeal of the council law was a step towards restoring the state’s lost glory and cultural heritage.
Governor Yusuf also issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Aminu Ado Bayero and the four other former first-class chiefs to vacate their palaces and hand over all emirate properties to the office of the deputy governor.
He expressed satisfaction that the new law would unite the people of Kano and drive sustainable socio-economic development. The governor emphasized that the bill’s signing symbolized the restoration of the revered legacy of the Kano emirate, which has endured for over a thousand years.
Additionally, he urged the populace to continue supporting his administration in delivering numerous infrastructural advancements for the betterment of Kano.
Governor Yusuf announced, “Today, we reappointed Sanusi Lamido Aminu Sanusi, popularly known as Muhammadu Sanusi II, as the 16th Emir of Kano, while the five former emirs are expected to vacate the palaces within 48 hours. They are to hand over all properties in their possession to the Commissioner for Local Government, who also serves as the state Deputy Governor.”
He concluded by stating, “Under the new Kano Emirate Repeal Law 2024, Kano state is now under one emirate.”
