Three police officers allegedly involved in the shooting that led to the death of University of Port Harcourt graduate Anthony Obodo have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force.

Obodo, who was reportedly awaiting his National Youth Service Corps call up letter, was shot along the popular Ada George Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, disclosed the disciplinary action during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, saying investigations had established the culpability of the affected officers.

Adepoju said the officers were subjected to an orderly room trial alongside another officer who is currently at large, following which they were recommended for dismissal.

He said the dismissed officers would subsequently be charged to court to face appropriate criminal charges in accordance with the law.

According to the commissioner, the action demonstrated the command’s determination not to shield personnel accused of abusing their powers or violating professional standards.

He said the patrol team had given chase to the deceased during the incident, after which Corporal Alfred Louis, attached to the team, allegedly opened fire at the vehicle.

“The bullet hit the driver identified as Anthony A. Obodo ‘M’, who sustained gunshot injury,” Adepoju said.

The victim was immediately taken to Palmer’s Hospital in Port Harcourt, where he was treated but was later confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

Adepoju said the three members of the patrol team were immediately arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive investigation.

He added that efforts had been intensified to locate and arrest Inspector Solomon Nwrogu, who allegedly absconded following the incident.

Adepoju said the command remained committed to professionalism, accountability, respect for human rights and the protection of lives and property.
