…Former presidential aide secures diplomatic clearance after months of uncertainty; to represent Nigeria in four countries

The Government of Mexico has formally accepted the appointment of former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the country, nearly 11 months after President Bola Tinubu nominated him for an ambassadorial position.

Omokri announced the development on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, disclosing that the Mexican government had granted its agrément, the diplomatic consent required before an ambassador-designate can formally assume the position.

According to him, the approval was delivered by the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, to the Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.

The development brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding Omokri’s diplomatic posting, following earlier reports that Mexico had yet to communicate its acceptance of his appointment.

Omokri was among 32 ambassadorial nominees announced by President Tinubu on November 29, 2025. The list included former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

The Senate subsequently confirmed the ambassadorial nominees in December 2025, paving the way for their deployment to diplomatic missions abroad.

On March 6, 2026, Tinubu approved the postings of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to Nigerian missions across the world, assigning Omokri to Mexico City.

Other prominent appointments included Mahmood Yakubu to Qatar, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to Spain and former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to Greece.

The President also directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to commence induction arrangements for the envoys ahead of their deployment.

However, Omokri’s appointment attracted attention when reports emerged that Mexico had not granted the diplomatic approval required for him to assume office.

In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that most of Nigeria’s ambassadorial appointments had received the consent of their host countries, with Mexico and Japan among the outstanding cases.

The ministry maintained at the time that diplomatic engagements were ongoing and expressed confidence that the pending approvals would eventually be secured.

Omokri had also dismissed suggestions that Mexico rejected his appointment, maintaining that the delay was part of the diplomatic process.

Announcing the latest development, Omokri, whose full name is Bemigho Reno Omokri, expressed gratitude to God and confirmed his designation as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the United Mexican States.

He further disclosed that his diplomatic responsibilities would extend beyond Mexico to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua through concurrent accreditation.

The arrangement means Omokri will represent Nigeria in four countries, with Mexico serving as his principal diplomatic posting. Concurrent accreditation allows an ambassador resident in one country to represent the sending state in other countries without maintaining separate resident ambassadorial positions.

Mexico’s approval represents a significant step towards Omokri’s formal assumption of diplomatic duties, although he is still expected to complete the applicable credential presentation process. Omokri did not indicate when he would formally assume office or present his credentials to the Mexican authorities.

The appointment marks a new phase in the career of the former presidential aide, who served under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan and subsequently became known for his political commentary and public advocacy.
