Barely four minutes later, Messi produced another moment of brilliance, picking out Lautaro Martínez, who clinically finished to complete a dramatic turnaround and send Argentina into Sunday’s final.
The victory keeps Argentina on course to defend the title they won in Qatar four years ago and sets up a mouthwatering showdown with Spain, who defeated France 2-0 in the other semi-final.
For England, the defeat marks another painful chapter in their long wait for World Cup glory despite a spirited campaign under Tuchel.
