The Nigerian Army has launched an inquiry to find the killers of soldier-couple Audu Linus and Gloria Matthew, who were allegedly murdered on their wedding day in Imo State.

The couple’s alleged murders were reported to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed branch, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

According to the Army, the killing was horrible and savage, and the men killed in the most terrible way possible.

It was reported that it was ironic that one of the soldiers, Matthew, who originates from Nkwerre council in Imo state and had ethnic ties to the decent people of South East Nigeria, was executed without regard for his relatives.

Military investigations have been initiated, according to the military.

The army added in a statement published on Tuesday by its spokeswoman, Onyema Nwachukwu, that the heinous conduct exemplifies the deep-seated hatred, desperation, and lawlessness with which IPOB/ESN foot soldiers have been inflicting terror on Ndigbo and other innocent Nigerians.

Nwachukwu bemoaned that the heinous murder, in which the assassins did not spare even their own citizen, Gloria, exemplifies callousness, impenitence, and is undeniably a flagrant act of terrorism done by IPOB/ESN.

He also expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, relatives, and close acquaintances, and urged members of the public to provide security authorities with actionable information that would lead to the perpetrators’ arrest.

According to the statement: “The Nigerian Army (NA), on Saturday 30 April 2022 received information on the gruesome, barbaric and most despicable manner in which members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN) murdered in cold blood, two soldiers Master Warrant Office) Audu M Linus (retired) and Private(Pte)Gloria Matthew, who were on transit to Imo state for their traditional wedding.
Apparently, the soldiers had embarked on the trip to fulfill the traditional rites of conjugating their matrimony, as the very well respected and cherished Igbo tradition demands.”
