European football nations have threatened to boycott future FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, if FIFA President Gianni Infantino proceeds with plans to sell ownership interests in the tournament to private investors.
The warning followed an emergency meeting of UEFA and its 55 member associations, which unanimously rejected FIFA’s proposal to transfer ownership stakes in the World Cup and other FIFA competitions to outside investors.
In a strongly worded statement, UEFA declared that “the World Cup is not for sale,” arguing that football’s biggest tournament should remain a sporting legacy rather than a commercial investment.

According to reports, FIFA plans to establish a new company, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), valued at about $20 billion, with approximately 20 per cent of the venture to be offered to private investors.
The proposed structure has sparked widespread opposition across Europe, with concerns that private ownership would fundamentally alter the governance of world football.
UEFA warned that once investors acquire ownership interests in FIFA competitions, commercial returns would become the driving force behind decisions on tournament formats, scheduling and the future direction of the global game.
The European governing body also criticised FIFA for allegedly developing the proposal without meaningful consultation with member associations.
“It is both irresponsible and indefensible that a proposal of such significance for football was conceived in secret and brought to the brink of approval without any meaningful consultation,” UEFA said.
The organisation accused FIFA of presenting national associations with an ultimatum, describing the process as “governance by intimidation” rather than democratic decision making.
UEFA maintained that football’s interests should never become subordinate to shareholder returns.
“Football cannot mortgage its future for financial gain,” the statement added.
In its strongest warning yet, UEFA announced that no European national team would participate in FIFA competitions for as long as the proposal remains active unless FIFA abandons the plan entirely and provides binding assurances that its competitions will never be opened to private ownership.

“Some things are simply too important to sell. The FIFA World Cup belongs to football. It always will,” UEFA declared.
