Pastor Bolaji Idowu of Harvesters International Christian Centre (HICC) has advised against entering romantic relationships while unemployed, arguing that financial hardship can distort one’s judgement and lead to misguided choices in partners.

Addressing his congregation, Pastor Idowu cautioned that relationships formed during financial difficulty may be based on necessity rather than genuine affection.

He explained that once financial stability is attained, individuals may come to realise that the relationship they once valued was, in fact, unfulfilling. He attributed this to what he termed a “crumbs mentality”—where people accept less than they deserve because of limited options.

“Don’t date when you are jobless,” he said. “There are some relationships that seem attractive—not because they truly are—but because you have no money.”

“When you eventually have your own money, you’ll be shocked at the people you thought you were in love with. It wasn’t love; it was hunger.”

He continued: “Never negotiate on an empty stomach—you’ll get a bad deal. That’s what crumbs mentality does. When you’re poor, the smallest things satisfy you. One of the signs is settling for less far too easily.”

Pastor Idowu urged his listeners to embrace a mindset of abundance, prioritising personal development and financial independence before pursuing romantic connections.

“I’m encouraging a shift in your thinking,” he added. “I hear people say things like, ‘If I can just travel to America.’ How can that be a life goal? You must think beyond survival.”
