A place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final is at stake as England and defending champions Argentina prepare for one of the most emotionally charged semi-finals in football history on Wednesday in Atlanta.
The blockbuster clash will mark Lionel Messi’s first ever competitive meeting with England, adding another chapter to one of international football’s fiercest rivalries.
For England, it is an opportunity to reach their first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 1966. For Argentina, it is another step towards defending the title they won in Qatar 2022 and giving Messi a fairytale ending in what is widely expected to be his final World Cup.
The contest pits two generations of football greatness against each other.
Messi, 39, has already become the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer and is tied with France’s Kylian Mbappé on eight goals in the race for the Golden Boot.
England, however, boast their own superstar in Jude Bellingham. The 23-year-old midfielder has scored twice in each of England’s last two knockout matches, becoming the first player to achieve that feat since Diego Maradona at the 1986 World Cup.
Captain Harry Kane has also been instrumental, matching Bellingham’s six-goal tally as England continue their march towards history.
The semi-final revives one of football’s most politically and emotionally charged rivalries.
The teams have met five times previously at the World Cup:
* England won in 1962 and 1966.
* Argentina eliminated England in the infamous 1986 quarter-final, featuring Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal and his stunning solo effort.
* Argentina prevailed on penalties in 1998 after David Beckham’s red card.
* England gained revenge in 2002 through Beckham’s winning penalty.
Wednesday’s encounter will be their first ever World Cup semi-final meeting.
England reached the last four after defeating Norway 2-1 in extra time, but head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted his team were fortunate to progress.
“We were lucky,” Tuchel admitted, insisting his players must improve significantly against Argentina.
Despite the criticism, England have won four consecutive World Cup matches and remain unbeaten under Tuchel in the tournament.
Victory would send the Three Lions into only their second World Cup final.
Argentina booked their place in the semi-finals after defeating Switzerland and are chasing a third appearance in the World Cup final in four tournaments.
Although Lionel Scaloni’s side have not been at their most fluent, they have repeatedly shown the resilience that made them world champions four years ago.
With Messi seeking one final World Cup triumph and England desperate to end a 60-year wait for another final appearance, Wednesday’s showdown promises to be one of the defining matches of FIFA World Cup 2026.
The winners will face either France or Spain in Sunday’s final.
