Pep Guardiola has turned down an offer to become Italy’s next national team coach, despite the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) reportedly offering him the freedom to shape the role and a lucrative financial package.

The decision comes weeks after Guardiola left Manchester City following a trophy-laden 10-year spell at the club.

FIGC president Giovanni Malagò had earlier confirmed that talks were held with the Spaniard, suggesting the federation was prepared to make “exceptions” regarding his salary in an attempt to lure him to the Azzurri.

However, according to the BBC, Guardiola has informed the federation that he intends to stick to his original plan of taking a break from football.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager is expected to use the time to rest, spend more time with his family and travel before considering his next coaching challenge.

FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini disclosed on Thursday that Italy’s first choice was former AC Milan and Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, who currently manages Brazil.

However, Ancelotti opted to remain with the Brazilian national team, forcing the federation to pursue Guardiola.

Reports indicate that, beyond offering a substantial salary, the FIGC also assured Guardiola he would have significant control over the national team project as Italy seeks to rebuild after failing to qualify for three consecutive FIFA World Cups.

Despite taking time to consider the proposal, Guardiola ultimately declined the offer.

With Guardiola and Ancelotti out of the race, former Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo has emerged as the leading candidate for the job.

Pirlo, who currently coaches United FC in Dubai, could now be tasked with reviving the fortunes of the four-time world champions.

If appointed, he would lead Italy into a challenging UEFA Nations League campaign against France, Belgium and Turkey before attempting to secure qualification for Euro 2028.

Italy are desperate to restore their status among football’s elite after missing the last three FIFA World Cups, one of the worst periods in the nation’s football history.
