The landlord of a three-storey building in the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos which collapsed on Saturday is on the run as the death toll has risen to five.
According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), 20 individuals were rescued from the rubble of the collapsed structure.
The South-West Territorial Coordinator of NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, stated on Sunday morning that a total of 20 people had been pulled out of the debris.
“Unfortunately, five dead bodies were recovered, which comprises of three females and two adult males,” he said.
Those rescued, Farinloye noted, included nine adult males and one adult female.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), which had initially confirmed one fatality during Saturday’s rescue operation, updated the figure on Sunday morning, reporting four additional deaths.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said in a statement on Sunday that the five adult victims had been taken to the morgue.

He clarified, however, that the number of rescued individuals remained at 13, as reported on Saturday, and confirmed that all survivors were receiving pre-hospital care.
“All first responders remain on the scene to continue search and rescue operations. Further updates to follow,” Dr Oke-Osanyintolu added.
